contradictions and waste |

We are still sweltering in this neck of the woods. Last week, a friend attended a conference on global warming and energy conservation. It was held on a university campus... home of the 'well educated,' you know. Or at least that is what we're told. My friend noted that while the outdoor temps hovered around 100 degrees (F), the thermostat in the conference room was set at a bone chilling 68, thus the 'contradictions & waste' theme of this editorial rendition. The gas-play speculation in our region to my mind qualifies big-time under this heading. Consider, as reported by KARK-TV back in June, that "the town of Greenbrier, Arkansas is booming and many say the Fayetteville shale drilling is to thank for it. So far this year, three new restaurants have located there, including Due Amici Two, a popular Italian restaurant in Conway. Also, the Greenbrier Inn and Suites just opened over a month ago. The owner there says the hotel has been booked ever since. Many of their customers are oil and gas workers who work on rigs north of the town. Natural gas development from the Fayetteville Shale could generate over five billion dollars for Arkansas' economy through 2008." Yet as evidenced by Gozarks recent analysis of property taxes [see: Property Values impact every resident of Van Buren County, June 2006] there is a dark side to this gilded coin which shall, given past trends in other places prove predictors, eventually be pumped to the surface and precipitate back upon us as not such good cheer. For more on this, see our growing collection of reference links on local gas-play. Last but not least in this editorial go-round, we offer a (some would say incendiary) guest editorial on the subject of governmental waste and ethical contradiction, penned by none other than the ArmchairHoodlum himself, Michael C. Kelley, which addresses the recent crash of a National Guard helicopter in our fair state, alleging that the craft may have been shot down. Read Kelley's new editorial here.
