The Van Buren County Literacy Council is a
non-profit organization providing free literacy services to all
residents of the county.
Volunteer tutors are the mainstay of the program. The council
provides training workshops for adult literacy tutors and has an ongoing
need for volunteers.
The majority of our students learn to read through the one-on-one
tutor/student program. This confidential, personalized and
success-oriented approach to reading is successful in meeting the needs
of adult learners.
Non-English speakers wanting to learn the English language enroll in
the ESL (English as a Second Language) program. Specially designed
materials are used in group sessions or one-on-one tutoring.
The ''Family Read Together'' program teaches parents and care-givers
the strategies of reading that will enhance their children's literacy
skills while having fun together.
All these services are provided free of charge. The Learning Center
is open Monday through Thursday, 9 am to 11 am. Tutoring can be
scheduled at the learner's convenience.
