11AM. The Perfection of Violence: Suicide Bombers and the New Rules of
Engagement Duane Bedell Clara Thompson Hall The image of terrorism to the
western world is the suicide-homicide bomber. It is widely accepted in
national security and law enforcement agencies that suicide-homicide
bombings as practiced in Israel, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Indonesia
inevitably will occur within the United States. Unfortunately, the rules
of engagement for incidents involving a suicide-homicide bombers still
have not been consistently developed. Duane Bedell, director of the
National Terrorism Preparedness Institute at St. Petersburg College in St.
Petersburg, Florida, will discuss current national policies that confuse
war, law enforcement, and civil liberties---to the detriment of all three.
As you've heard, a growing
voter revolt is pushing dozens of long shot congressional races into play
in places like Kentucky and Idaho (yes, Idaho!). Call for Change is the
perfect tool to put races like these over the top, but we need way more
calls to target these new districts.
>Saturday-Sunday, October 28th-29th --
Another big round of
national phone parties the weekend before Halloween. We'll be making
turnout calls to key voters, and we'll spice things up with an optional
costume contest, some pumpkin carving (Cheney-o-lantern anyone?) and—of
course—some great candy.
We need at least 1,000
hosts to sign up this week so we hit our call goals and target new
districts. And we know there are folks EVERYWHERE ready to make calls, if
someone will step up and host. Can
you host a Halloween call party at your place?

The Laws of War and the War on Terrorism Eric Posner 11AM Clara Thompson
Hall. Eric Posner is a law professor at the University of Chicago and
author of several books, including his most recent release, The Limits of
International Law, with Jack Goldsmith. International law has evolved to
regulate conventional wars between belligerents wielding armies in the
field. These laws can function only so long as those countries have a
mechanism for disciplining those who fail to comply with international
law. Such a mechanism does not appear to be available in the conflict
with al Qaida and other related groups. For this reason, existing laws of
war are not applicable to the war on terrorism.
>Wednesday, October 18th ANNOUNCING THE SHOWING OF A MUST-SEE
DOCUMENTARY: IRAQ FOR SALE. In the FRISCO ROOM at THE LIBRARY STATION,
2535 N. KANSAS at 7PM.
The
documentary, Greenwald’s follow-up to his critically-acclaimed
Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price,
is a searing indictment of the war profiteering perpetrated by four
companies – Blackwater, CACI, KBR/Halliburton, and Titan – operating in
Iraq
Bottom line: A credible indictment against corporations currently enjoying
windfall profits thanks to the Iraq war – according to Frank Scheck, movie
review.
IRAQ FOR
SALE
takes you inside the lives of soldiers, truck
drivers, widows and children who have been changed forever as a result of
profiteering in the reconstruction of Iraq. From Army soldiers outsourced
from their military jobs by contractors making five-times what they do, to
truck drivers abandoned by their company to die in the dessert at the
hands of insurgents. From the mother of a former NAVY SEAL who blames
corporate negligence for his violent death in Fallujah, to the truck
driver from Oklahoma who watched his employer literally burn brand new
trucks to the ground in a bald attempt to rake in more money.
IRAQ FOR SALE
is a movie about corporate traitors stealing American money and
spending American lives – exploiting the Iraq War to make a killing for
themselves.
